KORN Cancel Indonesian Concert Over Volcano Eruption Fears
May 6, 2006According to a posting on the KORN fan site KornTV.co.uk, KORN cancelled their previously announced May 4 show in Jakarta, Indonesia due to an active volcano, their management has said.
The management reportedly told the local papers said the band were afraid the Merapi volcano would erupt during their stay in the country.
KORN were scheduled to play at the Tennis Indoor Stadium in Jakarta Thursday (May 4) in what would have been their first visit to Indonesia since February 2004.
Merapi (photo),one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes (it has erupted 68 times since 1548),lies in one of the world's most densely populated areas and dominates the landscape immediately north of the major city of Yogyakarta. Its name means "mountain of fire." It is very close to the city of Yogyakarta, and thousands of people live on the flanks of the volcano, with villages as high as 1,700 meters above sea level. In light of the hazards it poses to populated areas, it has been designated a Decade Volcano.
At the present time, the volcano is at Alert Level 3 (of 4 levels). More than 5,000 Indonesians have fled their homes as the initial lava flows have oozed from the volcano. Approximately 30,000 people are in an immediate danger zone for which forced evacuations would be necessary in the event of an eruption.
Merapi is the youngest in a group of volcanoes in Southern Java. It is situated at a subduction zone, where the Indo-Australian Plate is sliding beneath the Eurasian Plate. The volcano is rougly 500km (310 miles) away from the capital Jakarta.
